I need help logging into the Teaching Station for my lecture. What do I do?
Using the touch screen, you can log into the teaching station with your UTORid and password. If you do not have access, press the intercom button on the lectern for assistance, or call the Office of Space Management (OSM) at 416-978-6544.
What type of web conferencing service does Discovery Commons offer (i.e. how can I share video, voice and digital content within a group)?
Discovery Commons has a few web based technologies that can offer this functionality. Note that whatever the solution used, broadband connection speeds can determine the quality of a broadcast over the internet. The first option is ePresence, a U of T developed application used for webcasting out to various client computers who setup a free user name and account. Students can view a one way video feed with a lower text pod window visible for instant messaging out to the host site. Our second option is Oovoo, a robust third party “face to face” web application allowing for multiple participants to join a virtual meeting room for real time chat with a personal web cam, microphone and desktop sharing. A free client download file is needed to run this application.
I have a presentation with a Q&A period that I’m giving to a large group at the MSB and I would like to offer this to participants off-site as well. How can I do this?
Use ePresence, a webcasting solution. While you are presenting to the large group at MSB, off-site participants can view the presentation live at their own PCs and use the text chat function to ask questions. The webcast technology uses high-definition cameras and microphones and displays the content, such as a Powerpoint. Your off-site participants are given (via advance email) a username and password to access the webcast site. During the Q and A, the moderator of the live session can read questions that have been sent by off-site participants and answer these along with questions from the live audience. The session can also be recorded and made available online.
