Computing and Networks FAQ

When I plug my pc into a jack I don’t have internet access. Why not?

In our attempt to provide safe, stable, reliable access to the campus network the required configuration is different from your private network at home.  Usually you could just plug into a jack and get an automatic IP address, but here on campus we enforce strict control over network access, as per University guidelines, so therefore you would require a static IP address from us. This allows us to ensure the appropriate person is only using their assigned IP address.

How do I get an IP number for my computer?

A fixed IP number is required for most workstations and equipment that are wired via a jack to the building network infrastructure.  The IP number assignment is based mainly on location, much like the telephone area code. To receive an IP number, simply contact the Discovery Commons service desk. Your request can usually be fulfilled the same day. There is no charge for an IP number. If you cannot enter the settings one of our technicians can provide further assistance. Please note:

  • Do not guess at IP numbers as this may affect other users.
  • DHCP is not supported unless you are on a private network or using wireless.

Who do I call to unblock an IP address?

Call the Discovery Commons help desk to report the blocked IP. A network administrator will have the IP unblocked, once its been determined that the system is cleaned of viruses or issues with computer is resolved.

How do I know if my IP address is blocked?

Can I use P2P software such as Skype?

Although use of the campus network is free, it is strictly limited to educational purposes.  For the vast majority of the time P2P programs are used for non-educational purposes and therefore are prohibited.  If you attempt to use such programs your IP address will be blocked, and depending on the severity of the infraction we may need to escalate the case to your supervisor or manager.
