UTMail+ and ONE Mail Direct

Email Options for Medical Students

As of Fall 2011, Medical Students will have access to two new email systems:
UTmail+ and ONE Mail Direct. These two separate systems are intended to be used in two very different contexts; please take a moment to familiarize yourself with their different features and uses.

UTmail+ is a new University-wide email system that all registered students will receive this fall. It is completely separate from ONE Mail Direct and is the replacement for the older UTORmail email system, which is being phased out.

UTmail+ is to be used for academic, course-related, and personal communication.  All clinical communication must be done through ONE Mail Direct (or an equally secure system.)

UTmail+ runs on the Microsoft Live@edu e-mail and document management platform. In addition to email, this platform provides access to Office Web Apps that include web-optimized versions of Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. All these functions can now be accessed anywhere, anytime, via web browser or mobile device.

UTmail+ includes the ability to connect to Outlook, a 10GB inbox, and access to 25GB of password-protected online storage through SkyDrive.
Your UTmail+ account has been created for you; simply go to mail.utoronto.ca to log in with your existing UTORid and password.

UTmail+ addresses end with @mail.utoronto.ca, rather than @utoronto.ca.  To forward your old address to UTmail+ visit uoft.me/emailforward. To migrate your old account visit uoft.me/migration.

ONE Mail Direct provides students with secure email for clinical communications with their supervisors, fellow students, and other members of the health care team. ONE Mail Direct is run by eHealth Ontario (www.ehealthontario.on.ca).

ONE Mail Direct is intended solely for clinical communications. All other academic, course-related and personal communication should be done through UTmail+ or a personal email account.

The Faculty of Medicine has partnered with eHealth Ontario to provide ONE Mail Direct, which is used province-wide for exactly such secure clinical communication. Neither UTORmail nor UTmail+ are considered secure by hospital standards, and by policy must not be used to send or receive any personal health information.

Your ONE Mail Direct account comes with 75MB of storage, which is expandable to 150MB upon request. Your ONE Mail Direct account will be yours for as long as you practice medicine in Ontario.

A ONE Mail Direct account will be requested for you on your behalf early in the academic year. Once created, you will receive an invitation email at your University of Toronto email address. To activate your account, simply follow the instructions in the invitation email.
