Although phishing attacks are (unfortunately) an everyday occurrence, a recent message from “Revenue Canada” with a subject of “Your Tax Return “ has caused more than the usual concern. So, I thought I would send a reminder about phishing attacks—what they are, and how to avoid them.

Preventing network printers from printing pages of random characters

There have been reports of pages of random characters printing from network printers, in some cases these are hundreds of pages. While there are many approaches that prevent this, a good approach is a departmental firewall. That will allow you to protect not only your printers but all network devices on your departmental network. If you implement a firewall, don’t for get to allow the AMS/ROSI print server to send print jobs on tcp port 515 through.

Fake Blackboard Prompts

We have been alerted to attempts by hackers to target UofT students with fake “Blackboard” prompts, which redirect to a fake Blackboard login page. This could include receiving an email that says you have an important course announcement or assignment due. The real UofT Blackboard can only be accessed via the UTWeblogin page. Also, always make sure that the URL says, and not, or any other URL.

Notice to all MAC users working with E-Token Authentication

Please be advised that the new release of MAC’s O/S (OS X EL-Capitan Version 10.11) available on September 30 2015 has issues working with the E-Token software and USB Key. If you are considering upgrading to Version 10.11 OS X EL-Capitan and you are using an E-Token please keep in mind that the E-Token will no longer work with this version of MAC OS.
