Videos in the MD Program
Videos are an important resource in the MD Program. MedIT manages much of the video content available to students and others, including classroom lecture recordings, instructional scenario videos, interviews, and studio lectures. Following are some FAQs on video delivery in the MD Program.
Q. What should I know about the video delivery systems in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine?
- MedIT manages TFoM videos on 3 delivery platforms: Stream, Panopto, and Vimeo.
- Some departments use Youtube as their delivery platform, and we do not manage those videos.
- Lecture recordings and other videos that are part of course materials in the MD Program after January 2022 are on Panopto
- Access to MD-Program videos in Panopto is based on enrolment in Elentra courses; however, you must click the Course Videos link in the left menu of the Elentra course to gain access.
- Access to videos can also be added for anyone outside of the university community
- Videos are searchable, and automatic captioning is provided
- Lecture recordings and other videos that are part of course materials in the MD Program from August 2019 to January 2022 are on Stream
- Stream is a Microsoft Office 365 (O365) application available to students, faculty, and staff at the university
- Access to the MD-Program videos in Stream is based on permissions; these permissions, in turn, are based on students’ year of study (eg: 2T2)
- All students from 1T9 to 2T1 have been added to Stream, and thus can view all of their relevant videos
- Most faculty and staff have been added to Stream. If you do not have access, please look through the FAQs below on Stream access
- Captioning is available and can be turned on or off
- Other videos, generally not part of course materials in the MD Program (with the exception of 2T5 lecture recordings from August 2021 to December 2021), are on Vimeo
- Vimeo allows any of several privacy restrictions for sharing videos (eg: for ony the recipients of the video link, for anyone on the internet, or for posting to a certain domain).
Q. As a student, how do I access the lecture recordings or other MD Program videos?
Access to course videos is generally restricted to those enrolled in the Elentra course.
Course videos are on the video delivery platform Panopto, and your access to them is facilitated by your enrolment in the Elentra course. However, there is a link you must click on the course home page to enrol you as a registered user in the video delivery platform. This only needs to be done once, but it needs to be done for every different course.
- Go to the home page of the course where the video is posted in meded.utoronto.ca (Elentra).
- In the left menu, click Course Videos. The videos are in folders titled with the Week numbers.
- Navigate to a folder that has a video you wish to watch.
- Alternatively, after you click the Course Videos link in the left menu of the course home page once, you can go to any video posted in an event in that course and view it there.
Some of our older recordings are on the Stream platform. For access to videos in all courses in 2T1, 2T2, and 1st, 2nd, and some 3rd-year courses in 2T3. Stream access is tied to your U of T O365 account. After opening Stream once, you should be able to bypass steps 1 to 4.
- In a browser, log into your Utoronto email account: outlook.office.com
- Click the waffle icon at the top left
3. Find Stream in the list of apps and click on it. If it is not listed there, click All Apps to see more options
4. Sign in with your UTORid and password if prompted
You should now be in your Stream portal. There are several ways to access the lecture recordings from the Stream portal page. One will be described here, and you may find other ways that suit you better.
- In the top menu, click My content, then select My Groups.
- Click on the Group that reflects your year of graduation; eg: 2T3
- Click on the lecture recording you wish to view
Q. As a faculty member or tutor, how do I access the lecture recordings or other MD Program videos?
For videos in years 2T4, 2T5, and 2T6
For the most part, these videos are on the video delivery platform Panopto, and your access to them is facilitated by your enrolment in the Elentra course. However, there is a link you must click on the course home page to enrol you as a registered user in the video delivery platform. This only needs to be done once, but it needs to be done for every different course.
- Go to the home page of the course where the video is posted in meded.utoronto.ca (Elentra).
- If you do not have access to Elentra, please send an email to md.elentra@utoronto.ca with the title: Require Elentra Access, and include your name, utorID, and to which course(s) you require access*.
For videos in years 2T1, 2T2, and 2T3
These videos are on the video delivery platform Stream, part of the O365 suite.
- If you have never viewed an MD Program video in Stream, you must first be registered. Please send an email to MedIT with the title: Require Stream Access, and the following information:
- your name and title
- your utoronto email address; eg: j.smith@utoronto.ca (ie, not a gmail address or hospital address). You cannot watch the videos from these years if you do not have a utoronto email account or cannot sign into it.
- Log into your Utoronto email account: outlook.office.com
- If you have an O365 account with another organization, you must sign out of that account and sign into your utoronto O365 account
- Click on the Group of the video you wish to view; eg: 2T3 MD Program Videos
- Click on the lecture recording you wish to view.
Q. What if I cannot remember my Utorid password?
See this page for information on recovering your password: forgotten Utorid password
Q. What if I have a video, such as promotional or for professional development, that needs to be posted outside of Elentra?
For videos that can be public facing, we are putting them on the platform Vimeo. Our account allows for degrees of viewing restrictions, from none (open access) to password protection. Contact MedIT for more information.
Q. Can I (or can students) share the lecture recordings or other videos with others outside the U of T MD Program?
Lecture recordings and other videos that are part of the course materials are for the exclusive use of U of T MD students, staff, and faculty. You may not share, copy, or repost them for viewing by anyone else without written consent from MedIT.
Q. Are all of the lectures recorded?
Most regularly-scheduled lectures in the Foundations curriculum are recorded and the video is posted in the Course Videos link of the course in Elentra (https://meded.utoronto.ca); however, some lectures are intentionally not recorded (those with patients, for example).
Q. How long after a lecture takes place is the recording available?
Foundations
Recordings of regularly-scheduled Foundations lectures will be posted to Elentra within 1 working day of the end of the lecture, with two exceptions:
- the lecture is required content for an assessment that takes place less than 1 working day after the end of the lecture. In this case, we will process and post the recording on the same day that the lecture takes place.
- there is a technical issue and the recording is not viable.
Clerkship
Recordings of regularly-scheduled TTC and TTR lectures will be posted to Elentra within 2 working days of the end of the lecture.
Q. What if there is a technical issue with a lecture recording?
While we record each lecture with both primary and secondary recorders, technology can fail on occasion, potentially resulting in no recording. If this happens, the MD Program leads or administrators will decide on the course of action; often, a video with similar content from a previous year is posted.
Q. How long will students have access to the recordings?
Students will have access to the recordings until they graduate from the undergraduate MD Program. For example, a student entering the program in August, 2021, will be able to view Year 1 through Year 4 lecture recordings until the summer of 2025.
It is important to note, however, that while, for example, a 2T5 student who wishes to review a 2nd-year lecture on a particular topic will be able to view it, it may not be the same lecture that the student attended; instead, it will be a lecture from a current 2nd-year class.
